Many of us want to lose weight. And most of us know that this requires a healthy diet, a good exercise routine and sensible decisions. But, with busy work schedules and family life, we also know that this is hard to do. That's why many of us look for quick and easy solutions to shed those unwanted pounds. But many of the so-called miracle diet trends, which draw us in with a promise to lose weight within days, are not only unhealthy, they are dangerous to our bodies. You must remember – if it sounds too good to be true, it probable is. While losing 10 or 20 pounds in a couple of weeks may seem tempting, once that miracle diet is finished, you will likely put the weight right back on because your body will be craving the nutrients it has been missing. If you choose a healthy weight loss method and avoid the ones below, you will get to your weight loss goal in the healthiest way possible.
1. Cleansing Diets
Many cleansing diets out there today are based on a strategy of limiting what you eat, meaning the amount of nutrients, minerals and vitamins you need for a healthy lifestyle are not ingested. Your body, therefore, goes into starvation mode. Any diet that limits the number of calories you ingest to an unhealthy level can lead to several health problems, such as cardiovascular and gastrointestinal diseases.
2. Tapeworm Diet
This diet suggests you eat one or several tiny tapeworms so you can continue eating whatever you like while the tapeworm digests up to half of it for you. You will lose weight, but is it worth it? When you realize that you actually have to eat partially rotted meat or feces that is infected with tapeworms, the answer is likely no. The danger of this diet comes from immediate infection after ingesting the feces or rotted meat. If your tapeworms breed, your weight loss could become drastic, with a long list of health risks, including malnutrition, indigestion, protein deficiencies, a potbellied appearance, intestinal bursting and perhaps death.
Many of us have been here – preparing for a big night out with our friends by starving ourselves a couple days before to ensure we look slimmer. But there are several problems with this plan. If you are out partying and combine a body deprived of nutrients and vitamins with binge drinking you will likely experience mental malfunctions, a weakened immune system and possibly acute alcohol poisoning.
If you don't give your body any calories, you will obviously lose weight. But at what cost? Starving yourself is never a good idea. If you don't give your body what it needs nutritionally for an extended period of time, you will experience fatigue, muscle degeneration, a weakened immune system and hair loss. Anything beyond a 24-hour fast is very dangerous for your body.
The theory with this diet is that if you take laxatives you will be preventing your body from absorbing any calories when you eat. But when you eat, the calories in your food are ingested into your bloodstream even before the laxatives take effect. Therefore, the laxatives will only be removing your water weight, leading to dehydration, hemorrhoids, renal failure, pancreatitis and Irritable Bowel Syndrome.
6. Diet Pills and Stimulants
It's believed that by taking diet pills you are jacking up your heart rate and metabolism, forcing calories to burn quickly. However, energy drinks, diet pills and other stimulants can be dangerous – leading to such things as heart attacks, kidney failure, sleeplessness and even death. It's important to talk to your doctor before you take any type of pills to help you lose weight.
7. Bikini Diet
We all want to look good in a bikini but this diet is not your answer. While it promises to help you lose all the weight you want in 10 days, it is not sensible. The idea is to use a feeding tube through your nose to provide you with fluids containing protein, fat and water. It's kept in place for 24 hours and, after 10 days, you will have lost all your unwanted weight. However, can you even imagine doing this? Not only does it sound absolutely stupid, it is incredibly dangerous. It can lead to serious kidney problems, bad breath, lack of physical energy and painful constipation.
8. Sauna Suit
You read that right – a sauna suit that covers your body, helping you to sweat away unwanted body fat. However, dehydration and spiked body temperature can cause several problems. In one case, a young man in high school was found dead after using this weight loss tactic. He was a wrestler and was trying to make his weight class at school. When he was found, more than eight hours after he died, his core body temperature was about 100 degrees.
9. Induced Vomiting
Making yourself throw up your calories may help you lose weight quickly but there are dangers involved. Purging means you won't be letting the essential nutrients in your food go to your body. It can also cause ruptures, tears and ulcers in your stomach and esophagus. This weight loss method has also been linked to esophageal adenocarcinoma, a cancer that can be deadly.
Smoking is said to increase your metabolism and decrease your appetite, helping you burn more calories and eat less. However, we all know the dangers of smoking. Being a little overweight is nowhere near as dangerous as smoking. In fact, cigarette smoke causes 85 per cent of all lung cancer and has been linked to heart and skin disease - not to mention it makes you and your clothes smell bad.
