We all wish there were more hours in a day.  Finding time to workout can feel almost impossible after a long day at work, and shuttling kids to their extracurricular activities.  Lucky for you, we’ve put together this list of the highest calorie burning exercises.  That way the next time you actually manage to find time for a workout, you can be sure that you’re maximizing your efforts.  Click “Next” to see our list of the top calorie-busting activities.

1. Hula Hooping

Believe it or not, this childhood toy is actually a great way to tone up your midsection.  An adult sized hula hoop (larger and heavier than the ones for kids), can help you burn about 300 calories in half an hour - but don’t worry if you can’t keep it going for 30-minutes straight on your first attempt. Hula Hooping

2. Rollerblading

The side-to-side movement of your thigh and butt muscles while roller blading helps to blast fat and burn calories.  Skating at a strong, steady pace gives you a good workout without putting too much pressure on your joints.  Don’t forget your helmet! Rollerblading

3. Swimming

Perfect for staying cool while toning your muscles, swimming is a great full body workout that’s also easy on your joints.  If you’re looking for something calorie burning and low impact, your gym’s pool could be the perfect place to do some laps. Swimming

4. Stairs

You don’t have to be in the gym to get a high calorie-burning workout!  Running the stairs - of stadiums, or other public areas - is an awesome way to burn calories.  Plus, you’ll be toning your glutes in the process.  Running, jumping, and doing a few calf raises on the stairs are all effective ways to work different muscle groups in your legs. Running Stairs

5. Soccer

All of that running burns some serious calories.  But when you’re focused on the game, you’ll hardly notice how long you’ve been running up and down the field.  Join a league with friends and you may find yourself actually looking forward to your next workout. Soccer

6. Cycling

An hour of cycling at maximum intensity can burn up to 1000 calories per hour.  If that doesn’t make you want to hop on a bike, nothing will!  Other cycling based activities, like a Spin class, also burn plenty of calories while turning up the intensity - and the tunes - in an aerobics class on a stationary bike.   Cycling

7. Kickboxing

Working your legs and your core, kickboxing is a great way to burn calories fast.  Plus it can be pretty cathartic after a long day at the office.  Kickboxing will get your heart pumping, and tone up your muscles in the process. Kickboxing

8. Skipping

Jumping rope isn’t just for kids.  In fact, it’s an exercise that’ll help you maximize the number of calories you burn.  Add a few minutes of skipping in between your strength training to keep your heart beat up and burn more fat each workout. Skipping

9. Burpees

A full body strength training exercise, burpees are one exercise that even many regular gym-goers love to hate.  However, that’s only because of its effectiveness.  With every rep, you’re working your arms, chest, quads, glutes, hamstrings, and abs - something that’s not found in any other exercise.  Just a few sets should leave you feeling exhausted. Burpees

10. High Intensity Interval Training

If you haven’t heard of it yet, High Intensity Interval Training (HIIT) is one of the most efficient ways to burn calories.  It involves short routines done at a fast pace, alternating different exercises with no rest in between.  20-minutes will burn around 300 calories, with no cardio at all.  Each HIIT sequence is different, challenging the body, increasing the heart rate, and burning plenty of calories.High Intensity Interval Training
