It’s grilling season! Instead of opting for the classic burgers or hotdogs, which are always a hit, try some healthy grilling ideas this summer. Healthy BBQ options are tasty and great for the family and could become some new family favorites.
1. BBQ Corn on the cob
2. BBQ Skinless Chicken Breast
Chicken breast is easy to cook on the BBQ and you can season it how you like either by basting it with BBQ sauce or using a chicken seasoning. Whatever you opt to flavor your chicken the BBQ will be adding most of the flavour.
3. Vegetable Medley
Use whatever vegetables you are comfortable with. Use a vegetable pan and brush with extra virgin olive oil and a touch of sea salt. Popular veggies include: peppers, zucchini, mushrooms, tomatoes, asparagus and eggplant.
4. Herb crusted potatoes
Buy some in season new potatoes and cook with the skin on them for extra nutrition. Boiling the potatoes for 5-10 minutes will soften them and then just cut them in half and toss in olive oil, sea salt and fresh herbs before putting them on the BBQ in a vegetable pan.
5. Use the leanest cuts of beef and pork
7. BBQ Fruit
A nice salmon steak is quick to cook on the BBQ and can be done quite easily with just a little herbs and lemon. Salmon is full of omega-3 oils and great for your heart health. Salmon is also easily cooked on a cedar plank as well, for smoky flavours.
9. Shrimp skewers
Shrimp is a nice bright protein to prepare on the grill. You can either prepare whole for a punch of flavor or have them butterflied with lemon and garlic or herbs. When the shrimp shells turn a beautiful pinkish red colour you will know they are done.
10. Turkey burgers
Homemade burgers are quick and delicious. Try making your burger with ground turkey instead of ground beef. Add flavor with garlic, bread crumbs, onions and even a touch of soy sauce. Homemade burgers use an egg for binding and season with salt and pepper to taste. Putting burgers in the freezer for 10 minutes or so helps them to stay together.
