But with the right questions, you’ll be able to keep the conversation moving - and prevent those dreaded awkward pauses. 1. What was your favorite book when you were young?
Not everyone makes time to read now - but when we were little, the majority of us definitely had a favorite book or two. This question not only gives you some insight into their childhood, but also opens the door to talk about plenty of nostalgia.
2. What’s the weirdest thing that’s ever happened to you?
Weird stuff happens all the time, so there’s a good chance that your date has at least one story about a seriously strange experience. Maybe they were stalked by George Hamilton while visiting New York, or perhaps they once took a wrong turn and ended up in a nudist colony?
3. What’s your biggest goal in life right now?
This is a different take on the typical (and job interview-sounding), “Where do you see yourself in 5 years?” question. It’s a way to get your date to open up about their future, but also share what they’re most passionate about right now. Maybe they’re working on saving up for an around-the-world ticket, starting their own company, or simply, fixing up their apartment.
4. What would you want to eat for your last meal?
In real life, you might order a salad and some water because it’s healthy. But there are no such concerns when it comes to your final meal. Get to the heart of their favorite, calorie-filled foods. You may be able to bond over common favorites.
5. If you were a character from a movie, who would you be?
There’s really no right or wrong answer to this question. Well, maybe Kathy Bates’ character from ‘Misery,’ or Freddie Krueger or something. Basically, as long as your date doesn’t choose a serial killer, you’re probably safe to keep talking about your favorite flicks.
6. What’s your favorite thing about your hometown?
A good way to find out some cool stuff about your date’s childhood without getting their entire biography, this question focuses on the highlights. Plus, even if you grew up in totally different places, you may find that you have a few things in common.
7. What’s your favorite song to sing in the shower?
Cool goes out the window when you’re singing in the shower. This is the power ballad that they love to sing at the top of their lungs. This question will get to the bottom of your date’s musical guilty pleasures, rather than what they looked up on Pitchfork to sound cool.
8. If you were a superhero, what would be your superpower?
Sure this is kind of a throwaway question, but it does give you a chance to get see your date’s creativity. Plus, gives you the chance to jokingly ask about their superhero getup. Would they wear a mask, tights, and cape?
9. What’s on your bucket list?
Another good opportunity to share dreams and interests, this question gives your date plenty of freedom to share whatever is important to them. Whether they focus on career goals, personal growth, or adrenaline-filled adventures, you’ll be able to get a sense of their priorities - and how well they align with your own.
10. Who has been the biggest influence in your life?
Not everyone has the best relationship with their parents, but maybe there’s another person, like an Aunt, Uncle, grandparent, or teacher, who helped transform your date into the person they are today. This is a chance to catch a glimpse of your date’s core values - and learn a little more about their past in the process.
