So you've finally taken that major step towards getting a healthier, fit body – you joined a gym. You expect nothing less than perfection – after all, you've paid a hefty fee just to join. But not all gym-goers are the same as you. Some are rude, disrespectful and just plain annoying. Below are some of the worst things people have experienced at the gym while trying to work out. Make sure you read this list before you sign up so you at least know what to expect. Maybe working out at home has its benefits after all!
Almost every treadmill is open yet someone decides to take the one right next to you. Or you decide to take a body pump class and that one person decides to snuggle up as close to you as she or he can get, to the point where your barbells are almost touching. I mean seriously? Have they never heard of space?
The last thing you are looking for when you go to the gym is a date, right? You are sweaty, smelly and likely have bed head. But some people don't care. Some will use their gym time to flirt or try to strike up a conversation. Try to ignore them and get on with your workout. Go to a different station if you have to or, if you are a woman, consider enrolling in a woman’s-only gym.
Going to the gym shouldn't feel like you are watching a professional tennis match. But sometimes men grunt so loudly you can't help but be annoyed. Chances are they simply want you to notice how much weight they are lifting and be impressed. But you know they are just desperate for attention. Some noises come with the territory and that's fine. But super loud roars and grunts are just disgusting. Try putting on your headphones and listening to some nice, calming music.
Getting naked in the change room feels differently for everyone. Some enjoy walking around naked, exposing every inch of their bare bottom. Others, however, simply feel uncomfortable staring directly at certain body parts. While this can be stressful for some, there really is no way around it. Change rooms are for changing. If you don't like it simply wait until you get home to change and shower.
There are always those people at the gym who love themselves a little too much – you know, the ones who constantly walk by the mirrors, pose and stare at themselves. They will be at any gym you sign up at so be prepared to simply look the other way.
Perhaps nothing is more annoying than those people who use an exercise machine, sweat their arses off and then move on to another WITHOUT wiping down the machines. It's just plain gross to touch someone else's sweat. So, if you do nothing else to respect others at the gym, please, please wipe your sweat away.
You've paid your membership, your bank account is draining, so just LET US IN. Sometimes, getting past the front gate is more difficult than getting past airport security. If your badge isn't working it could take quality time away from your workout if you have to wait for a staff member to check your membership and let you in. Just. Plain. Annoying.
When you workout you are inhaling ten times harder than normal. So lay off the smell. Many people today are scent-sensitive so your perfume overload could actually be causing headaches or breathing problems for others. Sure you can wear deodorant (that's necessary to keep others from feeling nauseous) but save your expensive 'I'm so sexy' scent for the weekend.
Put it Away
Remember your parents telling you to clean up after yourself? Well, the same goes for the gym. Don't be a lazy bum and leave your weights, mats, foam rollers or other equipment all over the place for others to trip over. Return them to where you found them so others can get them when they need them.
Save it for another time. Sure, it's okay to make small talk about the class you just took or what equipment piece you like the best. But save the talk about how your girlfriend or boyfriend made you angry for another day. Talking during a workout session is not only disrespectful to the instructor who may be teaching the class, but also to the others around you.
